How to measure for a suit — the right way

Knowing how to measure suit size at home is simple if you have a soft tape, a mirror, and a friend. Follow these six steps, then plug the numbers into the calculator above for your exact size.

1 How to measure chest circumference for a suit

Chest circumference

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under the armpits and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape level and breathe normally — don't puff up.

2 How to measure natural waist for suit trousers

Natural waist

Find the narrowest part of your torso — usually above the belly button. This is your true waist, not where your jeans sit. Suit pants are sized from this measurement.

3 How to measure shoulder width for a suit jacket

Shoulder width

From the outer edge of one shoulder bone to the other, across the back. This determines whether you need a Slim, Regular, or Athletic cut — the shoulders are the hardest area to alter.

4 How to measure suit jacket length

夹克长度

From the base of your neck to the point where you want the jacket to end (typically mid-seat). Combined with your height, this tells us whether you need a Short, Regular, or Long length.

5 How to measure sleeve length for a suit

袖长

From the shoulder seam down to the wrist bone with your arm slightly bent. The sleeve should end exactly here — never on the hand, never above the wrist.

6 How to measure trouser inseam for a suit

Inseam (for trousers)

From the inner crotch seam down to the top of your shoe heel. Combined with your build, this finalizes the trouser size so the hem breaks gently over your shoe.

Men's suit size chart

Use this suit size chart to translate your chest measurement into a jacket size across regions. The number on a US or UK label is literally your chest in inches — a 42" chest is a size 42.

The letter after the number indicates length: S (Short, under 5'8"), R (Regular, 5'8"–6'0"), and L (Long, over 6'0").

提示: Pants are typically sized 6 inches smaller than the jacket. A size 42 jacket pairs with a 36" waist trouser as a "drop 6" suit.

How a suit jacket should fit

Even the right size will look wrong if the proportions are off. Here's what to check on the four points that tailors evaluate first.

How a suit jacket should fit — shoulders, button, sleeves, length
  1. 01

    Shoulders sit flush

The shoulder seam should sit on the bony edge of your shoulder — not before it (too small) and not hanging over (too big). This is the one thing alterations can't fix easily.

  2. 02

    The button closes cleanly

Button the top button and check the front. No pulling, no diagonal stress lines, no gaping. You should be able to slip a flat hand under the lapel comfortably.

  3. 03

    Sleeves end at the wristbone

Arms relaxed at your sides, the jacket cuff should hit just at the base of your thumb — leaving roughly half an inch of shirt cuff visible. Never on the hand.

  4. 04

    Length covers the seat

The jacket hem should end just below your seat, covering it fully. A handy test: let your arms hang naturally — your fingertips should curl just inside the bottom edge.

Common questions about suit sizing

Your suit size is determined primarily by your chest measurement in inches. A 40-inch chest is a size 40, a 42-inch chest is a size 42, and so on. The letter after the number — S, R, or L — indicates length based on your height. Use our suit size measurement calculator at the top of this page for an instant result that includes US, UK, and EU sizing.
Honestly, you can't — at least not reliably. Even if you know your shirt size, suit jackets depend on chest circumference combined with shoulder width and length, which require a soft tape measure. The good news: it takes under a minute. Grab a tape, follow our "how to measure for a suit" steps above, and plug the numbers into the calculator.
A well-fitted suit jacket closes cleanly at the top button without pulling, the shoulder seams sit on the edge of your shoulders (not before, not after), the sleeves end at your wristbone leaving half an inch of shirt cuff showing, and the hem covers your seat. If any of these are off, you need a different size — or a tailor.
A size 44 men's suit jacket equals a 44-inch chest measurement. The number on the label is literally the chest circumference in inches for US and UK sizing. In European sizing, this is a size 54 (always +10). In French, it's a 52 (+8). The chest stays the same — only the label changes.
"40R" means a 40-inch chest in a Regular length. The number is always chest size in inches; the letter indicates length: S (Short — under 5'8"), R (Regular — 5'8" to 6'0"), L (Long — 6'0" to 6'3"), and occasionally XL for taller men. Pants come separately, typically sized 6 inches smaller than the jacket.
The classic rule: the jacket should cover your seat completely while ending around the curl of your fingers when your arms hang naturally. A jacket that's too short looks boyish; one that's too long looks dated. Modern cuts run slightly shorter than 1990s norms, but the seat-covering rule still holds for any traditional business suit.
Slim has a narrower chest, tapered waist, and slimmer sleeves — best for lean builds. Regular sits comfortably with a standard chest-to-waist drop of about 6 inches — best for most men. Athletic keeps the broad shoulders and chest but tapers more aggressively at the waist — built for muscular V-shaped frames. Our calculator factors your selected build into the recommendation.
No. Men's suits are sized by chest in inches (e.g., 40, 42, 44). Women's suits typically use standard apparel sizes (4, 6, 8, 10…) or letter sizes (XS–XXL), driven primarily by bust and waist with a different cut philosophy. This calculator is built around the men's standard.
